It is generally accepted that the cause of irritable bowel syndrome is unknown. However, most experts believe that it may be caused by a number of interrelated factors such as: abnormalities in the digestive tract; overly sensitive digestive organs; a malfunctioning immune system; problems with the central nervous system; an unusual response to infection; and all importantly psychological factors such as stress and anxiety.
